Mighty Rights Press Interviews Vinni Ferrara about Residents’ Rights Bingo Game

Hi Vinni, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to talk with us.
We’re just going to ask you some questions to start. Can you please
introduce yourself and explain your position here at the DLC. Yes, I am Vinni Ferrara
The Ombudsman program specialist for the sates of Colorado with the state’s
long-term care Ombudsman. The Ombudsman program is an an advocacy program for
residents that are in long-term care, either nursing homes or assisted living, and I oversee that program.
What would you identify as the most widespread challenge to preserving the
rights for the people living is assisted living facilities that you visit?
I would say it’s safety versus resident’s rights because they have a right to make
choices but sometimes those choices
might interfere with their safety.
So, there has to be a balance of safety versus resident’s rights
Finally, how do you think the Resident’s Rights Bingo Game works to protect the rights of residents?
Well, first of all, I think it’s a fun game to begin with
but it’s very good at educating the staff as well as the other residents about all the
rights they have. Many times staff, that are very knowledgeable, still don’t know
all the rights that residents have so it’s very helpful in both cases, staff and other residents.
Thank you for your time!
